The Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), established on April 1, 1998, under the Science and Technology Act No. 11 of 1994, is Sri Lanka's premier government-owned scientific research and development organization. ITI evolved from the Ceylon Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (CISIR), founded in 1955. It operates under the Ministry of Science and Technology, focusing on advancing industrial development through research, consultancy, technology transfer, and testing services.
With state-of-the-art laboratories and a skilled multidisciplinary team, ITI supports industrial growth, environmental sustainability, and technological innovation. Its activities include research in herbal, food, biotechnology, materials, and environmental technologies, and providing technical services such as chemical, microbiological, residue analysis, materials, pharmaceutical, metrology, and petroleum testing.
ITI testing laboratories are accredited by ISO 17025:2017. ITI serves as a key collaborator with international organizations, including COMSATS, WAITRO, UNIDO, UNDP, and JICA. It also aids micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and startups by promoting technology transfer and value addition to enhance exports and develop import alternatives.
