AI is a powerful servant, not a master

AI is a Powerful Servant, Not a Master

In a recent discussion with ITN Digital, Dr. Pradeep Kalansooriya, Senior Lecturer and Dean of the Faculty of Computing at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), shared valuable insights on harnessing the full potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital transformation in Sri Lanka’s national development.

Key Highlights:

  • AI in Government Initiatives
Dr. Kalansooriya highlighted how AI is being effectively used in government projects, such as the integration of Inland Revenue systems with banks. This collaboration improves tax collection processes, increases transparency, and reduces inefficiencies — demonstrating how AI serves as a powerful tool to support human decision-making rather than replace it.

  • Digital Transformation as a National Priority
He emphasized that digital transformation is essential for sustainable growth and development. By digitizing services, the country can improve governance, enhance accessibility, and accelerate economic progress.

  • Data Collection and AI Processing
Dr. Kalansooriya explained how AI systems collect data from multiple sources—including sensors, public databases, and digital interactions—and process this data to identify patterns and make informed decisions. This is crucial in fields like disaster management, healthcare, and urban planning.

  • Ensuring Security in Digital Transactions
As more services move online, Dr. Kalansooriya stressed the importance of cybersecurity and the safety of digital transactions. Robust security frameworks and data protection policies are key to building public trust and safeguarding sensitive information.

  • AI as a Supportive Tool
He concluded by reminding that AI should be seen as a “powerful servant” that assists humans in making better decisions, rather than a “master” that replaces human judgment. When used wisely, AI can significantly enhance efficiency, transparency, and service delivery across sectors.
